Pop up London and other tales to be told...

view from parliament hill by Theo Brainin, see more of his work here

Now that it is a year since I graduated and moved back to London I have made a resolution to be a more engaged Londoner. To help myself and others, this post is a brief guide of who to follow on twitter / what websites to look at to get the down low on London’s popups, launches and less standard things to do…

had to show this again, mmmm

As a born-and-bred Londoner, I often take London for granted and resort to the familiar, homely, goey-poached-egg-serving Bull and Last at the end of my road, the flask in Highgate, or a walk up Parliament Hill with its panorama over London. These are my regular haunts, which are regular for a reason, but there is so much more going on that I could take advantage of.

Gin cocktail, photo stolen from Gin Garden - hope you don't mind!

LondonPopups(website here) is the definitive guide to popups with a big list of what is going on. This weekend, I will check out The Gin Garden (website here)at Fenton house, North of the river, and 50s themed, woop woop!

The Nudge London(website here) dubs itself an insider’s guide to London and features some rather different events. Today I am extremely excited to be going to the Bompas and Parr drivethrough for Mercedes. See my obsession with Bompas and Parr, here and here

bompas and parr crazy golf - stolen photo again...

This event is run by the Avante Garde Diaries @theAVGD who do lots of exciting events all over the world. It is held at Selfridges, who have been getting pretty involved in the popup scene. See the sadly finished but amazing Bompas and Parr crazy golf course made of cake here

photo stolen again, sorry Pop up Vintage!

For fairs and Markets, see Pop Up Vintage Fairs who hold monthly vintage fairs at St Stephen's Rosslyn Hill Hampstead & Islington Town Hall. Also at Old Spitalfields 3rd Sat of month and LondonFarmersMarkets who give you all the latest on London Farmers Markets, unsurprisingly!See Parliament Hill market here.

London on the inside and The Londonist, also tweet about a great array of music, art, food and drinking related fun!

In terms of cinemas that aren’t the Odeon, London has plenty of independent cinemas but my favourite are the BFI who show unusual, often old films and are pretty cheap.

Their's may be served in paper cartons instead but delicious all the same!

The Everyman cinemas which are really rather expensive but have a bar, really comfy sofas and nice food (mmm, wasabi peas) – perfect for a date.

Photo from Phoenix Cinema website

The Phoenix cinema in East Finchley was redone as a community project and is also rather beautiful with a bar.

A couple more places to check are timeout's guide to alternative London and designmynight.

Watch this space for write up of Bompas and parr drive through and Gin Gardens...
